Ahead of the opening night of John Fulljames’ new production of Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, catch up with the action from The Roundhouse and The Royal Opera’s Insight event, held earlier this month. We are delighted that once again we have been asked to be the orchestra for The Royal Opera’s baroque productions, conducted by our very own Christian Curnyn, following on from Orfeo at The Roundhouse in 2015.
Ulysses returns to Ithaca after the Trojan Wars to find his homeland unexpectedly charged with tensions from migrants escaping the same conflict. Disguised as a beggar, he returns to his palace and sees the many suitors who have been competing for his faithful wife Penelope’s hand. A dramatic story of love, loyalty and vengeance ensues.
The Return of Ulysses is considered an early masterpiece of Baroque opera. Roderick Williams sings the title role, with Christine Rice as Penelope.The opera is sung in English and conducted by Baroque music specialist Christian Curnyn. The Orchestra of Early Opera Company features on stage and 40 singers from Roundhouse and Royal Opera House local communities will be given the opportunity to perform on this iconic stage.
