A series of outstanding debuts have put British baritone Jonathan McGovern under the spotlight as an exciting talent to watch. Recent debuts have included Apollo in Handel’s Apollo e Dafne led by Christian Curnyn for The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Eugene Onegin for Garsington Opera, and the Wigmaker in Ariadne auf Naxos for the Edinburgh International Festival under Lothar Koenigs. Other highlights have included Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas for the Early Opera Company under Christian Curnyn, Apollo in Apollo e Dafne for The English Concert led by Harry Bicket at Wigmore Hall where his “tender artistry” (The Telegraph) was praised, Carmina Burana alongside the Brighton Festival Chorus, and a return to Calixto Bieito’s production of Johannes Passion for Teatro Arriaga Bilbao. Later this season Jonathan debuts as Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Scottish Opera, where he also reprises the title role in Don Giovanni in Sir Thomas Allen’s production.

Elsewhere in the UK, Jonathan recently made his debut as Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro with Welsh National Opera under Carlo Rizzi and toured with the company to The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for a reprise of David Pountney’s staging of War & Peace. For English National Opera, he sang Pish Tush in Jonathan Miller’s iconic production of The Mikado and joined Scottish Opera for a filmed production of Menotti’s The Telephone. Internationally, Jonathan debuted at the Théatre des Champs-Élysées, as Don Giovanni.

On the concert platform recent successes have included Dido and Aeneas at the Concertgebouw under Christian Curnyn, Fauré’s Requiem with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège conducted by Hervé Niquet, Junior in Bernstein’s A Quiet Place with Ensemble Modern under Kent Nagano in Berlin, Dortmund and Dresden, Carmina Burana at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Das Lied von der Erde with the Natalia Ensemble in Madrid.
